Scotty new to your site, loving it by the way. My question is how can you find out how much a dealer pays roughly for a new car. I know they are in business to make a profit. But I feel they stay in business by servicing your vehicle in the future. Consumer Reports used to have a service for about 9 Bucks that would tell you the Dealer invoice price etc. Any advice on this ?

There is nothing wrong with leasing as a normal consumer. You have the option of keeping it or getting something else if you don’t. It’s a good idea.

6:25 there is a logical reason why the fuel consumption would be higher with a full tank vs a low tank. That is less weight to carry. But is it noticeable?

Car dealerships don’t lose money. If they can advertise “$10-20k OFF MSRP!!!!!” It was overpriced to begin with. That’s why the head transmission guy at my local Ford store was taking home $100k per year 20 years ago.

Scotty have a 2016 Honda Pilot LX with 40,000 miles. Can you work on all the safety computer assist and intelligent cruise controls and lane management if the stop working ? The keyless entry and beep locking system is another complex electrical system. All in all computers run the whole electrical, fuel and safety system . Can you work on the whole car?

Many years ago my CPA had me lease a vehicle through my company then at the end of the lease I purchased it personally, so a $40,000 car I paid with TAXABLE income $5000,. People don't think, let's say for every $1000 you earn you pay $300 in income tax that means if you buy a car for $30,000 you have to earn $39,000 pay your $9000 in taxes then buy the car. See, see? BOOM!

Scotty, about the problem at minute 6 - there is one more answer. My 302 y.o. Corolla Liftback does the same. The pipe to the petrol tank has hole from the rust. And the top 3 litres (and a bit more) of the petrol just drops down... ;) So I just don't charge it to the top. I know that also dust goes inside the tank, but in real the car stays outside since the last December and I am driving the Focus combi diesel I have...

Actually, you will get slightly better gas mileage with less fuel in tank because it will weigh a little

Hello Scottie my Automatic Mercedes A class 2009 keeps showing ESP inoperative hazard light and sometimes the engine check light pops , I took it to a couple of mechanics they couldn’t figure out what’s wrong with it , they said I need to take it to Mercedes service to figure out what’s exactly going on , but here in the UK the Mercedes dealerships charge a big amount of money for any appointment it just sounds like a rip off , the car is driving normal but these lights seem to show and disappear from time to time , I would appreciate your advice thanks

Looking through the comments, I feel like I'm the only one that wasn't scared of the dealership and walked away with a fair price. Nice staff, excellent vehicle, some negotiating and an overall great experience. Managed to knock off thousands by simply working with my sales rep. Didn't get any extras and will return for service. Modest dealers do exist, it just might take a minute to find them.

I agree with Scotty a lot but he’s somewhat wrong about leasing. It’s simply an equation, does the math fit your life or not? New car every 2 or 3 years then definitely lease. Also cars like Toyota’s and Honda’s lease wayyyyyy better than crappy cars because they retain value. My last 2 Civics would’ve been cheaper to lease then buy then if I actually bought them outright. My last Civic had almost $1000 in positive equity towards the next one as a trade in. Also if you lease, Gap insurance is included, and you can often find especially with Honda, true first payment down only leases. That means if you agree on say $249 a month then that is your first payment, no tax no anything, just make sure they actually say that in writing. There’s no benefit to putting a down payment on a lease if you can avoid it.

Has never bought a vehicle from a dealership. And has never worked in a dealership. You know nothing about how dealerships work scotty🤦🏽‍♂️ most cars sold are sold at a loss to the dealership and the money is made up later in the Service department by mechanics like you🤦🏽‍♂️
